HS2 Speaker at Next Parish Council Meeting

Parish Council Meeting - 2nd February 2011, Parish Hall at 19:30

We wish to advise you that a short presentation will be given by Richard Lloyd, Chairman of HHAG, which is the opposition group to the High Speed Train in this area. The presentation will provide information to the Parish Council and residents, of the planned route and impact of the HS2 within our Parish, and all are welcome.

Christmas lights

You may remember that we asked you in our last Newsletter, if you would like to see Xmas Lights in the Village and with the festive season upon us you may be wondering what happened.

The Parish Council met with a couple of companies who could supply Christmas lights, early in October. Unfortunately when we approached Solihull MBC about the project and the implications of fixing the decorations to the existing lampposts, they highlighted that some modification work to the lampposts would be required and to carry out this work we would have incurred costs of £3750.00. The Parish Council decided that in the current economic climate these costs were too high and could not be justified, therefore regrettably, we felt unable to proceed with the project.

The Parish Council wishes all residents a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Prosperous New Year.

14th September 2010 - Resurfacing works and traffic calming maintenance – Bickenhill Road

Resurfacing works and traffic calming maintenance – Bickenhill Road

When will this happen?

Weather permitting; work will commence Monday 18th October 2010 for approx 5 weeks.

Time of work

Work will be restricted to Monday - Friday between 8.00am and 5.30 pm.

TRAFFIC INFORMATION

Due to the width along this section of Bickenhill Road it will be necessary to close the road to through traffic whilst the works are being undertaken. Residents and visitors will be allowed access to their properties during this time and a diversion route will be in place along Coleshill Road for the duration of the works. Unfortunately, when works are being carried out directly in front of your property there may be times when access is temporally restricted. However I can assure you we will make every effort to keep this to an absolute minimum. In order for work to be carried out with the minimum of disruption, please ensure your vehicle is not parked or obstructing the road during the time work is due to take place.
We will not carry out any works to private driveways and if you are approached by anyone about this type of work it is likely that this will be by a disreputable contractor. If you are approached, we advise you to follow the enclosed guidelines.

For further information on this work, please contact me on 0121-704-6121.

12th August 2010 -A morning spent with the bugs!

On August 2nd around fifty adults, children and dogs spent a very interesting and happy morning searching for bugs, rare and common, that live in Millennium Wood. The children were provided with nets to catch various creatures and were fascinated by Gary Farmer's talk which included the mention of a time when dinosaurs roamed the earth and the wood was under the sea. Thanks must go to Gary and his team from Solihull MBC for this guided walk. The sun shone, the children had a great time, and we adults came away knowing far more about the importance of our wood.

The car park on the Elmdon Lane side of Marston Green station will be officially opened on Tuesday 1st June. This will come as welcome news to the villagers and in particular to the residents at the station end of Elmdon Lane, who have been greatly inconvenienced during the construction of the car park especially over the last ten days or so. We hope that this car park will go a long way towards helping to solve the problem of cars parked, for many hours every day, on surrounding roads.

The community at work!

On 27th February, local residents living in and near to Maple Leaf Drive, were joined by members of Solihull MBC Environmental team, local Borough Councillors and members of the Parish Council, to paint the fence surrounding the John Black Centre, which was suffering from a major graffiti attack. We were pleased to be visited by the Mayor who came to make sure our work was up to standard!

The residents of the John Black Centre gave us much appreciated refreshments and even the weather was kind - for most of the time anyway. A good day was had by all and this was an excellent example of what can be achieved by working together. The Parish Council is grateful to all those who had an input in this huge task - it's a very long fence!

Elmdon Lane/The Fordrift pond

At the next meeting of the Parish Council, a representative from Birmingham International Airport will be visiting us to discuss the future of Pond at the corner of Elmdon Lane/The Fordrift.

The Airport have informed us that they are keen to respond to residents’ concerns about the pond and following their consultation with Warwickshire Wildlife Trust they are seeking ways to improve the pond. They wish to inform residents of the framework proposed by the Wildlife Trust and to explore the possibility of establishing a community project involving local people.

If this is of interest to you then please come along to the Parish Council Meeting on Wednesday 3rd March 2010 held in the Parish Hall, Elmdon Road at 7:30pm

Local Nature Reserve

We are working with Solihull MBC and Natural England to create a designated Local Nature Reserve at the Millennium Wood in Marston Green village and more information on this will follow later in the year.

In the meantime, Marston Green and District Lions have sponsored 2 waste bins in the wood and the attached photo is of the 'official' handing over of the bins. One of our other major projects is to encourage people to 'Stop the Drop' and as you will have read here, the two local schools have helped with their poster competitions. Hopefully these litter bins will be an added reminder to people using the wood that litter should be in bins and not on the ground.

Bickenhill Parish Councillor Clive Hill, says "We are delighted to be able to work with Marston Green and District Lions and are very appreciative of their support and help in sponsoring these litter bins."

Stop the Drop (phase two)

We are grateful to the pupils of Marston Green Junior School who helped us with the second phase of our Stop the Drop campaign. It was difficult to decide on the winning posters, such was the high standard of entries, but in the end there were five overall winners, and two other posters which were Highly Commended. Congratulations to winning pupils who are shown below on prize giving day in December.

Carols Around the Tree

On Tuesday night, (22nd December) around thirty intrepid people braved the bitterly cold weather to sing Christmas Carols round the tree in the Garden of Memory. The annual service, orgainised jointly this year by the Baptist Free Church and St Leonard's, was led by Pauline Griffiths and Stella Reece, and was followed by much appreciated hot drinks and mince pies.

November 12 2009 - Remembrance Day

Over the last few years we have been pleased to see a steady increase in the number of people attending this very important event, held in the Garden of Memory. Having listened to the feedback from last year, we hired for this year’s Remembrance Day, a PA system which allowed more people to hear the service.

We were delighted that for the first time in a number of years, the children of both the Infants and Junior schools attended, and their representatives were among those who laid wreaths on the War Memorial. There were well over two hundred people present, remembering those who lost their lives in the first and second world wars and also paying tribute to those whose lives have been given in more recent years.

June 29 2009 - Littering

This is  the sight which greeted walkers this morning, (Sunday 28th June) on the amenity land off Elmdon Lane.  Please help us to stamp out this behavior and to take care of our village.

June 2009 - Vandals target Millennium Wood.

Two weeks ago fires were lit in the wood, burning trees, shrubs and fences. In the latest attack, the plaque commemorating the opening of the wood in 2000, has been stolen. This is distressing as it is an important part of the the history of the village and was paid for by residents of Marston Green.

In a separate incident, fires were lit on the Amenity land at the rear of Elmdon Lane, again destroying shrubs, trees and fences in rear gardens. This took place late one afternoon and we would ask anyone who witnessed this, or sees anything whichcauses concern, to call the police on 0845 113 35000, extn 760 161 48

Stop The Drop Campaign

The children at Marston Green Infants School, and the village library, helped us to launch our campaign to raise awareness of the amount of litter being discarded in the village. The campaign, STOP THE DROP is part of an initiative by the CPRE (Campaign For Rural England) and it started with the school organising a poster competition. The pictures were judged by Rev Roy Allen and the Chairman of the Parish Council, Frank Bunce. There were ten finalists and three of these were chosen as the overall winners. The prizes were presented to the children at a special assembly on 1st June when Cllr Bunce awarded the three winners with book tokens and certificates. The remaining finalists were also given certificates.

The library have created a display of all the winning posters and photo's of the day, and you will be able to see all the 300 posters in the library until the end of August. We plan to continue the campaign throughout the year and will post any new events both here and also in the Parish Council newsletter.

4th October 2008 - Pedestrian Bridge Over Railway

We are delighted to tell you, that as a result of the many complaints about the pedestrian bridge over Marston Green Station, the Parish Council have made representations on your behalf to Solihull MBC and the result is that starting this month, and in addition to the regular daily cleaning of the village, the bridge will be cleaned every week, possibly on a Monday. Those of you who regularly use the bridge will know how unpleasant it is because of misuse and we hope that this will make it a much more user friendly place to walk. Unfortunately we don't have such good news regarding the graffiti. Because of cost implications this cannot be dealt with at the moment but we hope that at some time in the future this will be removed.
